Black hole sheds light on a galaxy

Source: arXiv, Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics

Light echo of a high-energy flash from a black hole first observed in detail. The flare almost certainly originates from a single star being gravitationally ripped apart by a supermassive black hole in the galactic core. The sudden burst of radiation was produced as the star was being pulled into the into the black hole accretion disk.(read more)
